AFT NM Overview
AFT NM is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers and the AFL-CIO. We represent 23,000 Early Learning-K-12 and higher education public school employees in New Mexico. AFT NM supports members and our leaders by providing professional leadership, legal services, legislative/political involvement, a membership benefits program and professional and personal development. AFT NM is governed by an elected member governing body that meets multiple times a year, including an annual state convention.

AFT NM is a public education organization that will face the following challenges over the next few years:

  • Developing and implementing a clear vision for AFT NM that includes increasing our membership strength, developing union leaders and strengthening our union via increased member involvement/mobilization around issues that matter to public school employees and the students we serve.
  • Enhancing our public and political image;
  • Creating professional development opportunities
  • Improving internal and external communications programs; and,
  • Maintaining financial viability and flexibility.

Overview of responsibilities: Organizer
AFT New Mexico seeks to hire a team of organizers to mobilize, recruit, and develop members to win. Under the direction of the AFT NM Staff Director and President, the organizer/field representative will implement and assist with AFT NM organizing and collective bargaining strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify local activists, leaders and drivers
  • Assemble and train leadership teams including building reps and organizing committees
  • Use toolkit and other databases to accurately track and record membership information and train local leaders to do so as well
  • Chart and Map turf
  • Run campaigns in locals to build majority membership
  • Work with local leaders to draft and execute annual and month-by-month organizing and mobilization plans.
  • Effectively grow membership
  • Train local offices on their duties and responsibilities
  • Help connect local leaders to state and national resources
  • Ensure that building/site reps have training regarding representation and union building
  • Build organizing committees at schools/institutions
  • Create campaign documents and literature
  • May assist in negotiation preparation
  • Develop and lead local trainings
  • Conduct regular site visits and off site one-on-one visits
  • Attend local meetings and events.
  • Work on local school board elections
  • Be committed to executing the vision of AFT NM
  • Will work out of regional based centers
  • May be assigned to work on political or project campaigns and events and to assist AFT NM as necessary
  • May help set up professional development programs in district

May be assigned by President and/or Staff Director to:

  • Will be available for local leaders to contact regarding potential contract violations and questions.
  • Be committed to executing the vision of AFT NM.
  • Will work to train leaders on how to process grievances
  • Will work with locals to represent workers in high level grievances, arbitration and termination cases
  • Will be available to answer questions regarding contract negotiations
  • May be available to assist with negotiating difficult contracts and work with locals on impasse mediation/arbitration.
  • May assist with filing and litigating PPCs
  • Performs any other tasks relative to the goal/mission of AFT NM as directed by the AFT NM President and AFT NM Staff Director

Experience, Skills, Aptitude and Commitment

  • Experience in education field
  • Experience in organizing, recruiting or mobilizing people to achieve a goal is preferred
  • Experience in representing workers is preferred
  • Track record of working professionally, in a team and independently
  • Ability to conduct assessments, track data and produce work reports
  • Ability to build committees amongst people
  • Demonstrated written and verbal competency in Spanish and English preferred
  • Proficiency in widely used computer programs and technology preferred
  • College education preferred
