Salary starting at: $101,752

This position oversees the Political Department’s PEOPLE (fundraising) program. PEOPLE is AFSCME’s Political Action Committee, funded by voluntary contributions from AFSCME members and their families. The Assistant Director is responsible for development, implementation and management of programs, strategies and processes that support the attainment of the Department and Union’s PEOPLE fundraising goals. The position works directly with AFSCME staff, affiliate leaders, affiliate staff and members on a regular basis in an effort to promote participation in the fundraising program. The Assistant Director is responsible for preparing materials, briefings and campaign plans that support the program. Represents AFSCME and the Department at various functions, including conferences, trainings, local meetings for the purpose of promoting the program. Develops the fundraising efforts at AFSCME’s convention every two years.

DUTIES:

Program Management:

  • Develop training materials and information brochures, including contribution cards that support and promote the program.
  • Work with affiliates to develop PEOPLE fundraising plans, including goals, timelines, tracking and accountability measures.
  • Oversees the development and conduction of PEOPLE training programs.
  • Explores and develops new fundraising models and vehicles including, but not limited to: email solicitation, apps, text program and more.
  • Supervises the Union’s PEOPLE booth at national convention, which includes staff management, material and clothing procurement, tracking financial transactions, developing incentive and participatory events and more.
  • Prepares briefings and backup documents as required by Department Director and other union leaders.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Travel required.

Staff Management:

  • Manages staff assigned to the program.
  • Assigns and supervises the work of administrative and professional staff assigned to the PEOPLE program. Identifies and coordinates development of PEOPLE merchandise and clothing for sale and incentive programs

REQUIREMENTS: 

Education & Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in political science and a minimum of ten (10) years of related experience with demonstrated competency in management of programs and previous supervision of staff or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of the political and legislative process to include federal and state election and campaign laws, congressional and state/local law making practices and procedures and both Federal and State campaign activities and finance laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of unions and their political action and fundraising activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lead and supervise personnel towards position goals and to work within a deadline environment.
