Summary: The four local SEIU unions within the Pennsylvania State Council represent nearly 80,000 members, united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide and dedicated to improving the lives of workers and their families and creating a more just society. The State Council works to coordinate the collective priorities of SEIU members throughout the state. As part of our work to advance a progressive agenda, SEIU PA State Council is looking for a project organizer to support issue and electoral campaigns in Northeastern and Southeastern PA.
Duties and Responsibilities: Regional field organizers are responsible for building progressive infrastructure in key geographies and helping to connect SEIU members to the critical campaigns we must win to succeed for working families in PA. Organizers will work with SEIU leaders and staff and collaborate with community partners to build power for workers and their communities in the region. This work will include, but is not limited to:
- Aligning union, community and political allies to enhance movement-building campaigns
- Identifying, recruiting and working with union members and allies to become effective leaders of strategic campaigns in their communities
- Developing relationships with allied organizations and activists and helping to lead progressive coalitions
- Organizing dynamic trainings and public events for SEIU members and others, including meetings, legislative visits, rallies and canvasses
- Helping people share their stories through public speaking, video, social media, and other communications
- Representing SEIU in various settings and relationships
- Coordinating opportunities for SEIU members to support and participate in partner-led activities
- Using social media tools to effectively engage workers and build networks
- Maintaining and sharing appropriate data and reports
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- A strong commitment to social, racial and economic justice and the desire to work hard to win
- Excellent ability to communicate with, listen to, and move people to action, and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
- Strong community or labor organizing experience
- Ability to exercise sensitivity and judgment when navigating organizational commitments and priorities
- Ability to work independently with a strong sense of accountability to shared goals
- Ability to build and sustain deep relationships
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends as necessary
- Digital and social media literacy
Location: Two positions, based in NEPA and SEPA regions
Travel: The position requires a valid driver’s license, a car, and willingness to travel and work on the road as required within Pennsylvania.
