SUPERVISOR: President, Southeast Minnesota Area Labor Council
The Southeast Minnesota Area Labor Council (SEMNALC) is a federation of more than fifty affiliated union locals collectively representing 40,000 working women and men in Southeast Minnesota. Our mission is to improve the lives of union members, as well as all working people, and to bring economic justice to the workplace and social justice to our state and nation.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The SEMNALC is seeking a full-time, Field Organizer to work with its affiliated unions and key community allies to develop and execute political, legislative and issue campaigns; build activism and local capacity; and mobilize affiliates, other labor organizations, community partners and allies to support the campaigns/actions needed to achieve our mission. The successful applicant will be expected to live within the jurisdiction of the SEMNALC.
The position will require frequent travel to the Twin Cities and throughout southeast Minnesota for meetings.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Work with affiliated unions of the SEMNALC and key community allies to:
- Hold one-on-one organizing conversations with local union activists, leaders and staff.
- Recruit, train and activate volunteers and activists for organizational, political and legislative mobilization.
- Organize and carry out membership mobilization for political campaigns, including doorknocks, phone banks and earned media activities, including press conferences, town hall meetings, rallies, protests and other grassroots events.
- Build new, strategic and mutually beneficial relationships between labor and community allies that strengthen labor’s ability to advance organizing and pro-working family policies.
- Map existing and potential relationships with labor, community, faith, non-profit and progressive organizations.
- Work with local unions to build worksite communication structures.
- Develop and implement strategic plans.
- Participate in RLF/ALC staff meetings, Area Labor Council meetings and State Federation meetings.
- Perform administrative tasks as necessary, including maintaining clear records, filing regular reports and utilizing the Labor Action Network’s (LAN) member lists, voter contacts and voter IDs.
Other duties as defined by the Executive Officers of the SEMNALC.
Position is part of the SEMNALC’s bargaining unit represented by the IAM. Starting salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid health insurance, retirement, vehicle allowance, vacation and sick pay.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Four years of post-secondary education preferred.
Experience
- Minimum two years of experience in union, political or community organizing campaigns.
- Knowledge of and experience with leadership development and in recruiting and mobilizing others to take action.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and drive effective and creative programs, convene and facilitate meetings and balance the interests of various stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to build and manage coalitions.
Skills
- Possession of excellent listening, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Possession of sharp problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint; Voter Action Network (VAN) or Labor Action Network (LAN) and Social Media.
- Flexible, creative and highly motivated.
- Ability to motivate and activate others.
- Ability to work in a cooperative manner with other staff.
- Ability to manage time and work independently within the context of a plan.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work long and varied hours, including nights and weekends.
- Ability to travel, possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Bilingual speaker a plus.
