The National Association of Letter Carriers, an AFL-CIO affiliated union, representing over 290,000 active and retired letter carriers is seeking a Legislative and Political Assistant to join its Department of Legislative and Political Affairs team in Washington, DC.

Our ideal candidate must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of juggling multiple assignments under tight deadlines. Candidates must have demonstrated writing experience and editorial skills. This position requires a team-player who can work independently to prioritize issues of the day and offer real-time reporting of happenings on Capitol Hill. The candidate must also have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment. An interest in promoting the legislative and political goals of organized labor/working families would be helpful.

To qualify, applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Communications or relevant field. Design capability a plus.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitor legislative and political news for potential reporting/responding.
  • Conduct research and fact-checking on all reported legislative matters.
  • Draft and edit department communications on the union’s legislative, political and mobilization fronts,  including: issue papers/fact sheets; talking points; reporting on hearings; legislation and Hill-related matters/news; website and social media postings; member news and updates; testimony; letters to congressional and agency offices; legislative and political statements; and regular email updates to activists.
  • Develop and edit streamlined materials for field use including presentations and trainings.
  • Coordinate with communications department on the timely distribution of materials to appropriate audiences.
  • Assist department director with other projects as needed.
