Field Union Representative
Based in Flint, MI
An immediate opening is available for a Field Union Representative committed to work for social justice by building a strong labor movement. The ideal candidate must develop leadership among the members, and be committed to building a strong union based on membership involvement and participation. The position includes irregular hours and work in the evenings and on weekends.
Responsibilities
- Regularly visit all worksites assigned to service during all shifts on which members work
- Return membership phone calls within 24 hours of initial contact, document receipt and return of phone calls, which includes topics discussed.
- Handle complaints and objections and turn them into positive discussions.
- Enforce collective bargaining agreements.
- Actively maintain the goals of membership sign-ups and participation in each of the units.
- Sign up members for Political and Fundraising donations.
- Identify and empower members, train stewards and assistant reps towards leadership and participation in the Local’s activities and membership events.
- Build and maintain worker’s committees
- Execute and participate in Fundraising events to benefit the membership.
- Actively participate with political activities.
- Mobilize members to participate in picket lines, rallies and demonstrations.
- Investigate, file and represent members in grievance procedures.
- Develop proposals with membership input and participate during the negotiation of contracts.
- Attendance at regular local membership meetings is expected.
Requirements
- Experience as a union representative and/or organizer preferred. Experience in retail and/or sales is a plus.
- Ability to drive to multiple locations throughout a regular work day (valid driver’s license).
- Must reside in Flint, MI or willing to relocate.
- Available to work 50 hours a week. Some evening and/or weekend work is required
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Ability to work with a diverse, multi-cultural membership.
- Excellent leadership and motivational skills.
- Knowledge of union culture and principles.
- Ability to work effectively independently, on task and on time.
