Internal Organizer

Based in St. Paul, MN
 

This temporary position will be focused primarily on implementation and enforcement of the first contract won by our home care members, including coordinating efforts for Labor-Management Committees, filing and monitoring grievances, and supporting Fiscal Intermediaries in following the contract’s requirements. In addition, this temporary position will involve organizing with other stakeholders in the disability-policy arena and conducting policy research.

SEIU Healthcare Minnesota is a union representing 35,000 health care workers who have united to build strong communities, a health care system that works for everyone, and to reclaim the American Dream. We are seeking a qualified candidate who wants to be a part an exciting, active and creative labor union. This is a full time, temporary position.

Responsibilities:
Primary responsibility is to negotiate and administer labor agreements in hospitals, clinics and long term care facilities throughout the state of Minnesota. This will include organizing and supporting political and regulatory activity, due to the strong role of Minnesota government in the health care industry.

  • Identify, recruit, train, develop and support stewards and work-site leaders
  • Create workplace structures and mobilize members on work-site issues in order to ensure contract compliance
  • Function with a high degree of independence doing continuous internal organizing within assigned facilities including member training and work-site campaigns.
  • Administer labor contracts; manage contract campaigns, and initiate related activity to achieve the vision and mission of the Local and meet obligations under the law and the contracts.
  • Participate in organizing campaigns when needed; lead campaigns for residual units.
  • Create and support internal communication tools.
  • Keep records, provide reports, attend meetings and respond to requests as directed.
  • Conduct arbitration hearings and related activity.
  • Other responsibilities as may be assigned to meet the needs of the Local.

Qualifications:
Previous union work experience is required; both private sector and public sector experience preferred. Full time experience administering labor agreements including direct negotiation of new contract agreements and experience as lead staff for either internal or external organizing campaigns is strongly preferred. Health care labor experience is preferred.

  • Experience working with people from widely varying ethnic, social, economic and political groups is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of health care regulations and funding in Minnesota preferred.
  • Able to adapt to a vibrant and evolving union culture and workplace dynamics.
  • Able to work long hours, irregular schedules, including evenings and weekends.
  • Able to travel as assigned as needed for training, conferences or work assignments.  Travel will include overnight stays.
  • Good listening skills; able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to function in computerized environment, including working knowledge of Word, Excel, Email, Internet and campaign-related databases, including smartphone data-base management.
  • Able to manage conflict, work with complex information and work under pressure.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle in good working condition.  Must have proof of auto insurance.
  • High School Diploma or GED, Secondary Education preferred.

Candidate will be assigned to meet the needs of SEIU Healthcare and management may alter assignment as those needs change.

Compensation and benefits as set forth in contract with USW Local 7263-21 for “Union Representative and Organizer.”
