General Statement of Duties
To develop and implement internal and external communications plans, including related deliverables, to support the mission and vision of the organization. Supervise communications staff that assist with or complete deliverables. Coordinate public and media relations activities. Consult and collaborate with organization staff and members on providing communication support for other departments’ projects. Consult and collaborate with allies and coalition partners on shared communication support for shared projects or campaigns. Perform other related duties as assigned by the President, including serving on the senior management team of the organization.
Supervision
This position works under the general supervision of the President.
Supervision Exercised
- This position directly supervises the communications staff.
- Exercises some supervision over clerical regarding special projects, the completion of correspondence, and dissemination and gathering of information
Examples of Duties
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Oversees and coordinates the organization’s media outreach program, including the development and execution of a proactive media strategy to support specific campaigns and to improve the public image and visibility of the organization and its mission, using a full range of media tools.
- Provides communications support for various campaigns, such as organizing, political strength, collective bargaining, worksite action, fundraising, or joint ally/coalitions.
- Ensures that key communication related deliverables for specific campaigns are timely delivered, including paid and earned media, press kit materials, member communications, newsletters, leaflets, brochures, direct mail, video, and electronically delivered products, such as e-mails, website, interactive tools, YouTube, Facebook or Twitter updates.
- Ensures that the organization’s website and new media resources are strategically designed, maintained and timely updated to effectively support the organization, its key programs and projects.
- Ensures that communication supports related to organizational events, such as meetings, conventions, trainings and rallies, are provided.
- Develops, executes and ensures that a communication plan to internally communicate with the organization’s members and staff is effectively operated and timely delivered.
- Ensures preparation of talking points and briefings for the organization’s officers and other selected spokespersons for press, public, and other events that may require messaging consistent with the organization’s campaigns or key projects.
- Ensures the organization’s officers and other selected spokespersons are coached or trained on how to be an effective spokesperson.
- Assists in the selection and development of a member spokesperson pool for print and oral communications in support of the organization’s communication plan or specific campaigns.
- Ensures the development and delivery of the organization’s member educational programs.
- Performs other duties as required to support the organization and its mission, including performing or assignment of back-up functions for subordinates.
- Provides direct support to the Collective Bargaining Advisory Committee and bargaining teams.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university with course work in the communications, marketing, political science or labor relations field. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
Experience: Five years’ professional experience in communications, marketing or political science to include at least two years in an administrator level role, plus two years of supervisory experience in any occupational area. The supervisory experience shall count as part of the five years’ total experience if related to communications, marketing or political science. Experience in labor relations is desirable. Each additional year of approved professional experience in communications, marketing or political science may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
Licenses and Transportation: Requires a valid driver’s license, auto insurance and automobile.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Ability to act and organize time with extreme independence.
- Knowledge of organizing and political campaign strategies.
- Ability to effectively work in a fast paced, dynamic organization.
- Ability to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.
- Ability to perform pro-active media outreach, and maintain good working relationships with journalists generating positive media coverage.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively with elected leaders and staff in complex and sometimes political situations required.
- Experience with web design, electronic communication, and new media.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience with Microsoft Publishing or Adobe Creative Suite a plus.
Working Conditions:
- Evening work and weekend hours as necessary.
- May be required to travel as necessary.
