Benefits of Union Apprenticeship Programs:

Apprenticeship programs provide academic and realistic training through a series of classroom training and four to five years of on-the-job training. The union apprentice must sign a contractual agreement (provided by the apprenticeship program sponsor) which defines working conditions, employment options and the duration of employment. After all, the apprenticeship sponsor is making an investment of time and money to train workers, it is important that after the training program is complete, that the apprentice stays on the job, with the apprenticeship sponsor.

Union workers receive higher quality benefits than non-union; such as a pension plan, 401k, medical, dental and eye care, as well as guaranteed vacation time. Union workers also receive higher wages. On average, a union worker receives $8.78 more (money and benefits) per hour of work than a non-union worker.

Union Apprenticeship programs are developed to combine structured, craft related classroom instruction (144 hours/year minimum) with on-the-job training under the supervision of an experienced, journey level worker. This means that the apprentice receives high quality training, that can be put the use on any job.
