I have been a Union member for over 30 years. I realize different Unions are organized and structured differently. I served 2 terms on the executive board and 12 years as a steward and Chief Stewrad of Commication Workers of America (CWA). Two years ago I became a member of IBEW 53. I can not tell you how bad it is.
Twice since I have been in this Union, a Steward position has become available. Twice I have volunteered and been ignored. There is no interview process, no submission of qualifications, just an email that says submit your name;
The last 2 that were appointed by the Chief Steward/Chairman have no Union experience. They also never attend meetings either. I have been asked repeatedly by my co-workers to be a steward. I have tried to explain that due to politics I have not been selected. As a matter of fact, none of the members who have prior steward experience can get appointed.
They are also upset because there is no diversity among our stewards. I have tried talking to the person over the Chief Steward and been blown off also. What would you suggest as the next step to becoming a steward and truly representing the members? The members talk about being scared of the Chief Steward. She is very vindictive...not my thoughts, the thoughts of my coworkers. Please don't think I am being petty. I just believe I can help make our Union a better place, and help my peers by keeping their best interest in mind.

Hi connor1130,

It sounds as though you truly would like to contribute through the role of a Steward for your fellow coworkers. I would first recommend consulting your Local's Constitution and Bylaws in regards to the appropriate process by which Stewards are selected. Then, communicate your concerns with the elected Union President and identify how you will be involved in the process for filling the next abalable Steward position.

Fraternally,

Dustin
